Our Background
American Expansion Joints, a division of Precision Hose & Expansion Joints, is a custom expansion joint manufacturer with over 40 years of experience. The President and founder of American Expansion Joints (AEJ), Tom Brown, has spent his entire career in the expansion joint industry. Starting with Garlock in 1974, Tom was instrumental in bringing the non-metallic expansion joint concept to North America. Later, Tom founded Dynex Expansion Joints in the early 1980s, which was sold in 1997 to RM Industrial Products. He then went into consulting and spent more than a decade working with Frenzelit of Himmelkron, Germany.
AEJ builds custom expansion joints for piping and ducting systems.
We service industries, including, but not limited to, the utility, pulp and paper, cement, chemical, and steel industries. We offer both stock and custom expansion joint products in metal, Teflon, rubber and fabric for piping and ducting systems.
We are known for our ability to produce any expansion joint style for an industry. If your business needs ducting or piping expansion joints, we will build a solution for you that is high quality and long lasting, yet economical.

We design custom expansion joint solutions based on your application specifications.
To determine if a custom solution is required, we must first collect and analyze your application requirements. While some applications can use standard, stocked expansion joints, there are many applications where custom manufacturing is required due to the application’s unique requirements.
The custom design phases involves analysis of an application’s pressure, temperature, media and thermal movements. This data is used to create a custom expansion joint for your specific application. All non-metallic expansion joints meet FSA/ESA (Fluid Sealing Association/European Sealing Association) standards of design, and all metallic expansion joints adhere to EJMA (Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association) calculations and design procedures.
We manufacture our expansion joints to meet the highest product quality standards.
Following the custom design specifications, the custom expansion joint is manufactured to a +/- ¼” tolerance. Metal piping expansion joints are hydraulically formed bellows as are metallic flue duct expansion joints. We use certified welders to manufacture the formed pieces into the final product.
Rubber expansion joints for piping are manufactured on mandrels and involve skilled tradesmen who lay up rubber and fabric plies to make the part. Once built, the rubber expansion joints are placed in an oven where the raw rubber is cured with temperature and pressure.
Non-metallic flue duct expansion joints are built with rubber and/or Teflon and use internal piles of fabric reinforcements to make the product.
We provide quality assurance and quality control using ISO 9001 principals for the custom manufacturing process. This ensures our products meet high quality standards.
